A responsive and iconic design of the museums’ connected and recognizable building for visitors to use as a social media filter.
THE OUTCOME
The purpose of this design is to boost social media engagement for both the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum. By layering the geo-filter on the museums’ visitors’ pictures taken at the location, they can share their fun experiences online.
Besides visually locating the museum online as a recognizable sight you are present in, the filter also serves as an interactive way of engaging with the space, especially for the targeted audience of Gen Z and younger millennials.
THE PROCESS
The goal is to create a filter that best represents both the National Portrait Gallery and Smithsonian American Art Museum, and have both museums have equal visual focus. The decisions behind this design stem from the idea of complementing the museum’s neoclassical architectural style inspired by the Parthenon. This can be seen through the typographic choices and iconography.
The icon is easily recognizable to represent the iconic building shared by both museums, but the design is also minimalistic and simplified enough to easily be visible by any range group. Since the design is meant for mobile use, a simplified and responsive design is crucial in terms of scaling, visibility, as well as inclusive design. Color also plays an important role in this to ensure there is always a strong contrast between the filter and the images it is layered on top of.
